Introduction to Roto & Paint - Coming March/April 2024

We are currently working on an entry level training course, designed to help recent graduates get their first job in the world of compositing. There will be 10 classes that encompass all the fundamental things you need to know to work as a Paint & Roto Artist in todays industry.

The cost of the course will be approximately £69.99 - with an initial launch price of £49.99. The course will feature 10 classes, approx 45 - 60 minutes long, split into 5 for Rotoscoping, and 5 for Paint. Students will be provided with EXR plates to use in the training and these can be used on showreels etc. On the 5th and 10th class, a production level task will be assigned to the trainee, this can be uploaded and sent to us for review upon completion - whereby we will provide feedback, and a completion certificate once finished.

The common misconception I am seeing too often lately is that artists straight from university are going to land themselves in ‘Junior Compositor’ roles immediately. While it may be possible in smaller studios, the larger studios will expect a compositor to have gone through Roto and Paint training prior to being a compositor.

A good compositor should have all of the skills a roto and paint artist has, and therefore working as a roto and paint artist will be much more beneficial to you as an artist in the long run when you do eventually work your way up to being a compositor.

I currently help supervise at a VFX studio in Doncaster, we are constantly being let down by Junior Compositors who cannot complete the most basic of Roto and Paint work - so do yourselves a favour, learn the basics first and spend a couple of years honing your craft.
